B Minor Mass – St John’s Smith Square – Pegasus/London Handel Players
June 13, 2016 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
The London Handel Orchestra’s performance of Bach’s St Matthew Passion at St John’s Smith Square in 2015, directed by Adrian Butterfield, was described by one reviewer as “the most perfectly performed musical experience in many years” (musicOMH). For the Mass in B Minor the same orchestra and director are joined by a stellar line-up of international soloists and the award-winning Pegasus Choir, a frequent collaborator with the London Handel Orchestra.
Bach composed the sections of his Mass in B minor over a period of a quarter of a century, and it was not performed complete in his lifetime. Yet its varied movements comprise a sacred drama as involving as his great settings of the Passion. Even today, the Mass remains one of the supreme challenges for choirs, soloists and orchestras—a many-faceted work of contrapuntal mastery, lyrical intimacy and uplifting grandeur.
